Background: Gymnastics - and at the World Championship at Strasbourg in France, the final day saw some beautiful performances and a surprise gold to one of the American contestants.
SYNOPSIS: There were 38 medals to be won at the Championships which were dominated by the Soviet Union. Nelli Kim of the Soviet Union won the gold medal for the vault.
The United States had a surprise win with Marcia Frederick's performance on the asymmetric bars.
It was the first gold medal to be won by the United States in the Women's section.
Romania's main hope Nadia Comaneci won a gold medal for her work on the beam. The Championships were a closely fought battle between the Soviet Union and Romania their old rivals.
It was a different Comaneci to the stripling of two years ago who won three individual titles at the Montreal Olympics. However good this performance was, she failed to dis-lodge the Soviet girls from the first three positions.
