Winnie Shaw followed this up by winning her first set 6-4 and taking the second to 4-2 against 21-year-old Brenda Kirk. But then the South African came back and swept Miss Shaw aside, winning the second set 7-5 and the third 6-0.
With 7,000 cheering fans packed around the Ellis Park court, Mrs. Pretorius and Miss Kirk went on the take the doubles and clinch South African's claim to the Federation Cup. Their tally against the British pair - Miss Wade and Mrs Joyce Williams - was 6-1, 7-5.
SYNOPSIS: Johannesburg - and in the final of the tenth Federation Cup, Britain's Virginia Wade serves to South Africa's number-one, Pat Pretorius.
Point to Mrs. Pretorius, but it was the British team leader who served for the match....(PAUSE)....Miss Wade took the first set 6-3 and the second 6-2. For a time it looked as if the British, having knocked out the holders, Australia, the day before, might win the Federation Cup for the first time.

Miss Shaw won the first set 6-4, but the 21-year-old South African came back to serve for the match...(PAUSE)...Miss Kirk took the second set 7-5, then swept Miss Shaw aside with a six-to-nothing final set.
Miss Kirk again, serving in the doubles against Britain's Joyce Williams....and the South Africans take the point.
