Background: The body of the late President William Tubman of Liberia was taken on Tuesday from the Executive Mansion in Monrovia to the Centennial Pavilion at Independence Square.

President Tubman is to be buried on Thursday at Independence Square, the historic spot where the declaration of Independence was first read and where all Liberian Presidents have been inaugurated.

The President died in London on July 23rd, at the age of 75. He had gone there for medical treatment, and died of the complications which followed an operation. He had held power for 28 years.

His Vice-President Mr. William Tolbert was sworn in on July 24th as the new President.

SYNOPSIS: Crowds of Liberians waited on Tuesday at the Centennial Pavilion, in Monrovia's Independence Square, for the arrival of the body of the late President William Tubman, form its lying-in-state in the Executive Mansion.

President Tubman died in London last week, after serving as President for 28 years.

His name has now joined those of other honoured leaders at this historic spot in the capital where the declaration of independence was first read, and where all Presidents of Liberia have been inaugurated.

The colourful gun-carriage procession to the Pavilion was led by four major societies to which the President belonged: the International Order of Good Templars, the Oddfellows, the United Brothers of friendship a society no white man is allowed to join - and the Masons.

President Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania enters the Centennial Pavilion, one of a number of African Heads of state who have travelled to Liberia for Thursday's funeral. Mrs. Antionette Tubman has returned from London, having been with her husband when he died.

Others paying their last respects are Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, Ugandan President Idi Amin, and Nigeria's leader Major-General Yakubu Gowon.

On Wednesday tribute was to be paid to the dead leader by the three branches of the Liberian Government - by the legislature, where Tubman served as a Senator, by the Judiciary, where he served as an associate Justice of the Supreme Court, and by the Executive, where he served so long as President.

Also due to deliver an address was the West African state's now President, Mr. William Tolbert.

The remains of President Tubman are to be buried in Independence Square near the Centennial Pavilion.
