    Background: ALGERIA'S FIRST NATIONAL FOLKLORE FESTIVAL -- A HUGE GATHERING OF DANCERS, MUSICIANS, SINGERS AND POETS -- OPENED IN ALGIERS ON THURSDAY WITH A PARADE WATCHED BY 20,000 PEOPLE.

    THE FOLKLORE FESTIVAL BROUGHT TOGETHER ALGERIA'S BEST DANCERS AND SINGERS - ARAB, AFRICAN AND FRENCH, AND CULMINATED INTEREST IN TRADITIONAL CUSTOMS THAT HAD BEEN GROWING SINCE THE COUNTRY GAINED INDEPENDENCE FOUR YEAR AGO.

    A GROUP OF TOUAREG DANCERS FROM DJANET IN THE SOUTHERN ALGERIAN DESERT WALKED ALMOST 600-MILES (965 KMS) TO THE NEAREST AIRPORT. IN FACT, 150 GROUPS FROM EVERY CORNER OF ALGERIAN TOOK PART IN THE PRELIMINARY COMPETITIONS.

    THE FINALS WERE NARROWED DOWN TO 48 GROUPS COMPRISING MORE THAN 1,600 PERFORMERS, AND THEY BEGAN IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE OPENING PROCESSION ON THURSDAY.

    AMONG THOSE AT THE OPENING SESSION WAS THE ALGERIAN LEADER, HOUARI BOUMEDIENNE.
