Background: President Jaafar Nimieri of Sudan has arrived in Egypt for a private visit. He was expected to hold informal talks with President Sadat on the Middle East situation and Sudan's support for guerrillas fighting Ethiopian troops in Eritrea.

SYNOPSIS: President Nimieri was greeted on his arrival in Alexandria on Saturday (August 20th) by Egyptian vice president Hosny Mubarak. No official announcement was made of talks with President Sadat, but the Egyptian leader has been spending his holidays in Alexandria and it was considered almost certain that the two men would meet.

President Sadat was expected to discuss Arab reaction to Israeli's decision to set up three more Jewish settlements on the occupied West Bank of Jordan. On Friday, Egyptian foreign minister Ismail Fahmi said the move was a 'serious escalation and aggression against Arab legitimate rights.' He added that the new measures showed that Israel intends to place more obstructions in the way of peaceful efforts being exerted to reach a solution to the Middle East conflict. Mr. Fahmi urged all countries of the world to condemn Israel's Egypt would hold consultations with Arab leaders on the decision.

It was also thought likely that during President Nimieri's visit, expected to last several days, the two men would discuss the fighting between Sudanese-supported guerrillas and Ethiopian forces in Eritrea. Sudan is seeking support for what it call the liberation struggle in the Ethiopian province.
