ARCHIE: "Dozens of policemen were on duty outside the marae at Waitangi this morning as the Government-General arrived for the investiture. But Sir David Beattie's security was provided by Maori wardens once he entered the gates.



"It's the first time a Governor-General has been asked to confer honours on the marae. Sir Graham Latimer and Dame Whina Cooper were honoured for their services to the Maori people.



"The speeches of welcome began as usual from the elders, but today special permission had been granted for the guests to be welcomed by the young. The protesters focused particular attention on the titles to be conferred, calling them pakaha honours. But Sir Graham Latimer was given a ceremonial club as a gift of recognition from the Maori people before the investiture began. Dame Whina Cooper was taken onto the dais to receive her honour when the trouble broke out, when someone leapt forward to seize a cloak. By the time it was Sir Graham Latimer's turn to receive his knighthood, police had arrested seven people and had surrounded the dais. The ceremony had continued uninterrupted, but many people were visibly shaken, including Dame Whina."

Background: INTRODUCTION: Nine Maori protesters were arrested in Waitangi, New Zealand, on Friday (6 February) at a ceremony marking the 141st anniversary of the treaty of Waitangi. Under the treaty, Maori chiefs acknowledged the sovereignty of the British crown over New Zealand, in return for possession of their land and status as British subjects.
