Background: Skiers from the United States once again dominated the World Hot Dog Skiing Championships held this year at the Italian Alpine resort of Cervinia on Sunday (7 March).

The United States took first and third place in the men's acrobatic section with Austria taking second place. In the women's acrobatic section, first, second and third places went to the United States.

Freestyle skiing, or hot dogging, as it is more popularly known among its followers, is the latest craze in the winter sports world. The spectator can see three different styles of hot dogging: ballet, acrobatic and mogul -- all performed at considerable risk to the participant.

Hot doggers have often been called 'mountain idiots' However, now their acrobatic antics have been officially classified as freestyle skiing.

The craze started about six years ago among people bored with the ordinary routine of downhill and slalom events.

Hot dogging is now so popular that special schools have been opened on the snow fields to teach the "art" of freestyle skiing to thousands of enthusiastic youngsters.

However, not all hot dogging involves fool-hardy individuals doing double back flips off ski jumps. For the less energetic there is the ski ballet, which is similar to ice ballet. Mogul skiing can be almost as dangerous as the acrobatic variety -- skiing down very rough uneven slopes.

SYNOPSIS: Cervinia, Italy, where on Sunday skiers from the United States once again dominated the World, Hot Dog Skiing Championships.

The United States took first and third places in the men's acrobatic section with Austria taking the second place. In the women's acrobatic section, America did even better -- winning first, second and third place.

Freestyle skiing, or hot dogging, as it is more popularly known among its followers, is the latest craze in the winter sports world. The spectator can see three different styles: mogul - skiing over very rough slopes, acrobatic and ballet. These skiers managed their acrobatic antics successfully ...

However, others showed that while the sport might appear enjoyable, it isn't always the case. Participants take a considerable risk, and hot doggers have earned themselves the nickname 'mountain idiots' because of their antics. Not a few have ended up in hospital nursing broken limbs.

Hot dogging does have its quieter, more graceful moments, as with the ski ballet. It isn't quite so energetic and is similar to ice ballet.

The hot dogging craze started about six years ago among people bored with conventional downhill and slalom events. Now, hot dogging is so popular that special schools have opened on the snow fields to teach the art of freestyle skiing.
