Background: A Jupiter 'C' Rocket, carrying America's second satellite was fired by the United States Army at Cape Canaveral, today.... and subsequently got lost. Five hours after it vanished through the clouds at 5,000 feet there had been no positive evidence that the satellite had been put into orbit. Later it was officially estimated that the final stage of the rocket had failed to ignite and that the satellite had 'burned up' in the friction of the atmosphere. The launching itself appeared to be perfectly successful: it carried a radio set, a two-way tape recorder and weighed about 32.4 lbs - slightly heavier than the first Explorer.
