Background: Portuguese President, Francisco da Costa Gomes returned to Lisbon on Saturday (4 October) to find the country in a worsening military crises. He hinted to newsmen that the nation could do with some of the discipline he found on his Polish and Soviet Union visits.

He said that he admired the will and determination of the Russians and the Poles in rebuilding their countries after the Second World War.

President Gomes said that their success was only possible because both Poland and the Soviet Union have planning, hierarchy--and discipline.
