Background: The United Nations Peacemaker in the Middle East, Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjoeld and Mr. Ben-Gurion, the Prime Minister of Israel, in Jerusalem (Israeli side) on Saturday, after talks in Beirut, troubled capital of the Lebanon.
The two men who met at the Prime Minister's home in Jerusalem had a general discussion on the working of the Israel-Jordan armistice agreement and in particular the possibility of a guarantee of Jordan's willingness to fulfil agreement on demilitarisation of Mount Scopus, an enclave just over the Jordan border which is divided into two zones held by Jordan and Israel.
There have been reports recently that the United Nations may take over complete supervision of the two zones by setting up posts on the Mount to watch the activities of both sides.
At the meeting was the Secretary-General's personal envoy, Mr. Andrew Cordier, (who is handling Mount Scopus affairs), United Nations truce supervisors and Israeli chiefs.
