Background: More than 150 Mujahaddin guerrillas attacked and destroyed a Soviet protected Afghan army supply convoy as it travelled along the Salang highway to Kabul. The raid, the latest in a long series of guerrilla attacks took place some 70 miles (110 kilometres) north of the capital.Three separate rebel groups banded together for the ambush and used rockets to knock out five Soviet armoured personnel carriers before moving in on foot to attack the fifteen trucks. The guerrilla's raid was successful and they captured some 25 Afghani prisoners together with their Kalashynikov rifles and an anti-aircraft gun. The guerrillas set fire to the convoy and withdrew. They say forty soldiers were killed -- all of them Soviets. Afghan President, Babrak Karmal, repeated his government's offer of an amnesty for the rebels earlier this year and called on them to join the Soviet-backed government. But guerrilla attacks have intensified over recent months and the flood of refugees from the country has increased.
