Background: With air pollution a very real problem in the United States at this moment, designers at a large electric corporation have come up with an idea to help ease the problem.....an electric bus.
By big city standards it is a very small bus, holding only 18 people, and with the throttle wide open it can only reach a speed of ten mile an hour. But being all electric, with no internal combustion engine; it has no noise, no tailpipe, no exhaust, and therefore no pollution.
Electric motor vehicles are not entirely new idea. They were used before the 1920's, but the heavy storage batteries, short running time and costly maintenance made these vehicles uneconomical.
However, the new electric bus, designed by the Westinghouse Corporation, can make 500 stops and starts and work a full eight hour day without re-charging.
The designers say the mini-electric bus is only the first step towards larger and faster models to carry people uptown and downtown without polluting the air.
