Background: In the Lebanon Falangist commander Sheikh Amine Gemayle has accused the Palestinian defenders of Tel Al Zaatar of torturing and killing Lebanese civilians. Rightist forces captured Tel Al Zaatar last week after a lengthy siege, and Mr. Gemayle called a news conference in Beirut on Tuesday (17 August) in which photographs were shown of equipment the Palestinians allegedly used to hang captured Lebanese by their legs. Mr. Gemavel said the Palestinians crucified victims, left some in sewers to die and buried others alive. He alleged that churches were used as a centre fur the torture.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Gemeyel told the journalists that the Palestinians who have live in the Tel Al Zaater camp since 1948, used to have friendly ties with the Lebanese, but that changed seven years ago when the camp became fortified. He said the Tel Al Zaatar camp was almost five times bigger than it was nine years ago and factories in the area had been destroyed causing thousands of Lebanese to lose their jobs.

The Palestinians in Tel Al Zaatar are alleged to have used these weapon to torture their Lebanese opponents. With the aid of an English interpreter Mr. Bitar, Mr. Gemeyel then described to the journalists some of the tortures the Palestinians are alleged to have used.
