Background: AS PRESIDENT SOEKARNO OF INDONESIA CONTINUES THREATS OF A FULL SCALE INVASION OF THE DUTCH TERRITORY OF WEST NEW GUINEA, DUTCH MILITARY FORCES, BACKED BY A PAPUAN BATTALION ARE TRAINING TO A STATE OF READINESS TO DEFEND THE TERRITORY.

FILM SHOT JANUARY 15, SHOWS DUTCH ARMED FORCES, INCLUDING MARINES, ON MANOEUVRES NEAR MANOKWARI, SITE OF THE TRAINING CAMP FOR THE PAPUAN BATTALION. IN A MOCK BATTLE, A GROUP OF MARINES "INVADED" FORM LANDING CRAFT, AND ADVANCED ON MANOKWARI'S AIRPORT. THEY WERE MET BY A MOTORISED GROUP DEFENDING APPROACH ROADS TO THE AIRFIELD. IN THE "FIGHTING" THE TROOPS HAVE PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE DENSE JUNGLE TERRAIN, AND IN THE USE OF WEAPONS, SOME SUPPLIED BY THE UNITED STATES. AMONG THE U.S.-MADE WEAPONS IS THE 81MM MORTAR, IDEAL FOR OFF-SHORE COMBAT. A CREW OF THREE IS NEEDED - A GUNNER, AN ASSISTANT, AND AN AMMUNITION CARRIER.

PREPARATIONS BY THE MILITARY FORCES HAVE BEEN ACCELERATED SINCE THE NAVAL ACTION ON JANUARY 15, IN WHICH DUTCH FORCES SANK AN INDONESIAN TORPEDO BOAT OFF THE COAST OF WEST NEW GUINEA. THE LATEST MOVE IN THE DISPUTE IS A REPORT FROM DJAKARTA ON JAN 20, CLAIMING PRESIDENT SOEKARNO HAS SENT A CABLE TO U THANT, ACTING UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL, STATING HE WAS "LEAVING THE DOOR OPEN" FOR A PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT OF THE DISPUTE THAT WOULD BE HONOURABLE TO BOTH SIDES.
