Background: They carried effigies of Premier Bertrand, Justice minister Paul and executive committee chairman Ssulnier and later burned them while en route home. The crowd was awesome ... it stretched for at least ten blocks and was sidewalk to sidewalk in width. A rough estimate of the crowd .... perhaps fifteen thousand and despite its bulk, there was order. ... parade organizers wearing special armbands made sure of that. They kept demonstrators in line .... sometimes dragging some student back into the crowd if he strayed too far. The protest march was supposed to file past the front door of City Hall where part of the police riot squad was stationed but the marching orders were suddenly changed as the first protesters reached Gosford street, the north-east corner of the city hall complex. The crowd was at least three times the size of last night's student foray against the Montreal headquarters of the National Union party. And other protests this week promise to be even bigger .... There was just one moment when parade marshals had to keep a tight rain on the crowd .... that was when they passed the Craig street office of the Montreal Star and the barrage of verbal abuse against anything English was heavy. But there was control and the parade headed west and up Beaver Hall hill, passing the Commerce House, the home of the Montreal Board of Chamber of Commerce trade and le chambre de commerce .... both targets of the youthful demonstrators. Always there was police .. on foot, in cars and on motorcycles and in two helicopters circling, always circling the massive parade. The scene of anti-government protesting over Bill 63 switches to Quebec city where the touchy legislation gets second reading in the national assembly. That's planned for tomorrow but the big day ... is Friday when even tonight's massive demonstration is expected to be just a token protest .. But right now the crowd is heading home ..... 2nd it was a peaceful rally.
