Background: FOUR CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS - ALL EXPERT CANOEISTS - ARE IN GREENLAND STUDYING THE ESKIMOS' KAYAK. THEIR EXPEDITION AREA IS ANGMAGSSALIK ON THE EAST COAST.

AFTER STUDYING THE BUILDING AND USE OF KAYAKS TOGETHER AND GETTING ACCLIMATISED TO THEIR NEW LIFE, THEY ARE NOW SPLIT UP, LIVING IN SEPARATE VILLAGES, HUNTING WITH THE ESKIMOS AND OFTEN AMAZING THEM WITH THEIR EUROPEAN CANOEING SKILLS AMONG THE ICEFLOES AND ICEBERGS.

THE ESKIMOS AND THE CAMBRIDGE MEN ARE TRYING OUT ONE ANOTHER'S BOATS. THE EXPEDITION'S WIDER SHORTER CANOES ARE MORE STABLE - "RATHER HEAVY" SAY THE ESKIMOS. THE MEMBERS OF THE EXPEDITION FIND THE KAYAKS "RATHER WOBBLY" BUT THEY ARE HOPING TO EQUAL THEM IN THEIR TRADITIONAL SKILL ON THE WATER.

THIS IS THE FIRST EXPEDITION OF EXPERIENCED CANOEISTS AND THE FIRST DEVOTED SOLELY TO THE STUDY OF THE KAYAK IN EAST GREENLAND. THERE THE CRAFT IS FOUND IN ITS HIGHLY DEVELOPED FORM AND IS STILL USED FOR ITS ORIGINAL PURPOSE OF SEAL HUNTING. THE FOUR SPEAK DANISH THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE - AND ARE LEARNING THE ESKIMO'S LANGUAGE TOO.

ESKIMOS FOR OVER 2,000 YEARS IN MANY PARTS OF THE ARCTIC HAVE BEEN BUILDING KAYAKS OUT OF DRIFTWOOD, WHALEBONE AND SEALSKIN, AND LIVING, SOMETIMES EXCLUSIVELY, ON SEALS SPEARED FROM THEIR FRAGILE CRAFT IN THE OFTEN HOSTILE ICY NORTHERN SEAS. IT IS ONLY IN THE LAST 100 YEARS, HOWEVER, THAT ANY ATTEMPT HAS BEEN MADE IN EUROPE TO USE BOATS OF EVEN REMOTELY SIMILAR DESIGN. AND EVEN THEN, IN THE LESS RIGOROUS CONDITIONS OF "PLEASURE BOATING," WHAT LITTLE HAD BEEN LEARNT HAS LARGELY BEEN FORGOTTEN.

THE EXPEDITION HOPE THAT THE GAINS FROM KNOWING BETTER THE ESKIMOS' HARD-WON KAYAK SKILLS WILL BE IMMENSE IN THE RAPIDLY GROWING SPORT OF CANOEING AND IN THE EXPLORATION OF POLAR REGIONS. KAYAKS ARE NOTED FOR THEIR SEAWORTHINESS IN SURVIVING WEATHER TOO BAD FOR ORDINARY BOATS. AND IN A DETAILED REPORT ON THEIR WORK, THE EXPEDITION HOPE THEIR FINDINGS WILL HELP ANTHROPOLOGISTS TO UNDERSTAND THE PART PLAYED BY THE KAYAK IN THE ARCTIC PEOPLE'S LONG STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL.

IN THE LAST FEW CENTURIES, SEVERAL ESKIMOS HAVE BEEN WASHED ASHORE IN KAYAKS ON THE ORKNEY AND SHEYLAND ISLES, OFF SCOTLAND - A JOURNEY OF OVER 1,000 MILES IN THEIR HIP-WIDE BOATS WITH HARDLY ANY SPACE FOR FOOD OR WATER. ONE OF THE KAYAKS WAS LATER TRACED TO THE ANGMAGSSALIK AREA SO ONE OF THE EXPEDITION'S AIMS IS THE STUDY OF THE ESKIMO'S METHODS OF NAVIGATION AND TRY TO FIND OUT HOW THEY SURVIVED ON SUCH LONG JOURNEYS.

THE CAMBRIDGE MEN ARE CHRISTOPHER SUTTON, GILES DICKINS, MICHAEL THOMAS, AND FRANZI POLDV, AN AUSTRALIAN WITH HIS HOME IN HONG KONG.
