Background: A five-day Regional Seminar on Ecology and Conservation in Tropical Africa, organised by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), opened in Nairobi on Monday (6 December). The seminar plans to introduce up-to-date ecological principles and newly-developed techniques for the assessment, conservation and management of Africa's renewable natural resources, to administrators of research institutions and scientists from the 11 African countries represented.

SYNOPSIS: The African Field Science Office of UNESCO in Nairobi, where a five-day seminar on ecology and conservation in Tropical Africa opened on Monday. Dr Ibukun, Head of UNESCO'S Kenyan Office, delivered one of the first speeches as host to the seminar.

The seminar plans to introduce up-to-date ecological principles and newly-developed techniques for the assessment, conservation, and management of Africa's renewable natural resources to administrators of research institutions and scientists.

Eleven African countries are represented at the seminar. Among the first speakers was Mr. J.M. Ojal, Permanent Secretary in Kenya's Ministry of Natural Resources, who told delegates that developing nations couldn't sit back and complacently assume they didn't have the problems now facing industrialised nations. The same problems existed in Africa, he said, even if not on the same scale. Mr. Ojal advocated taking every available measure to prevent and reduce environmental pollution.
