Background: In London, the Circus has come to town with a vengeance. Sixty of the greatest acts have been preparing for the Circus World Championships, which started on Monday (11 December).

SYNOPSIS: Inside the big top, pitched on Clapham common in South London, the noted trapeze troupe from Mexico, Los Padillas, have been practising with great zeal. They are intent on wresting the trapeze title form the Flying Cavarettas, the American troupe who won it last year.

It's exciting, but dangerous. This triple somersault attempt fails, but the routine will have to work when the competition begins.

In these, the third World Championships, there are four new categories: tight wire, springboard, foot juggling and escapologists.

Here's the reigning trapeze champions The Flying Cavarettas. They are four members of the same family, catcher Jim and his three sisters, Terry, Maureen and Kandy. In competition, they will be performing before five judges, and striving for a perfect score of one hundred points.

Terry has been perfecting her aerial act and trying to keep her nerve intact, since she was a youngster, less than ten years old. She is a world champion, but in trapeze work judgment is pared to the split second and millimetre - so even the greatest take a fall.
