Background: A seventh gold medal for America's wonder swimmer, Mark Spitz, the sprint double for Valeri Berzov of the Soviet Union and a high jump record for a 16-year-old West German girl were highlights of Olympic competition on Monday (4 September).

Mark Spitz won his seventh and last gold medal as a member of the American team for the men's four by 100 metres medley.

Borzov - who had won the men's 100 metres sprint in the absence of two of the world's fastest men - proved he had the speed to best the best in the 200 metres.

The home crowd had a bonus with an unexpected gold medal for 16-years-old Ulrike Meyfarth in the women's high jump. And, after winning the gold, she went on to equal the world record of 6 ft 3 1/2 inches (1.92 m) held by Ilona Gusenbauer of Austria.

SYNOPSIS: Monday in Munich...and a bout in the light flyweight boxing championship. Malawi's Shekie Kongo knocks down Chanylaw Haile of Ethiopia in the first round of their preliminary bout.

After the compulsory count, Haile was quickly back in the fight again and this time it was the boxer from Malawi who hit the canvas.

The crowd appreciated the fierceness of the bout. But the referee felt it had gone on long enough, and stopped it in the second round. Among these in the audience was a famous Ethiopian, Abebe Bikila. The winner-- Haile of Ethiopia.

Field hockey, and a clash between Australia and Holland, seen scoring its first goal.

It wasn't long before the Dutch had scored again, but the match was not by any means one sided.

The final score was Holland three; Australia two, so the Dutch moved into the semi-finals.

The men's triple jump, and here's Nelson Prudence of Brazil, jumping into third place. The event was won by Joerg Drehmel of East Germany with Victor Saneev of the Soviet Union in second place.

One of the glamour events of the track and field.....the men's two-hundred metres and Russia's Valeri Borzov streaks into the lead to finish first and add another gold medal to that he won in the one-hundred metres.

This is the field in the men's three thousand metres steeplechase. A newcomer to the event is Kenyan runner Kip Keine.....the Olympic champion over fifteen hundred ???res. Using a technique that several times brought him near to a tumble, the Kenyan policeman nonetheless won the event, convincingly from his team mate Ben Jipcho.

A gold medal and a shared world record for Ulrike Meyfarth of West Germany.

As the swimming events came to a close, the wonder swimmer, Mark Spitz of the United States, made his final appearance in quest of another gold medal. He competed in men's four by one hundred metres medley and led the American team to victory. It was a fitting finals for the young American dentist who had already taken more gold in one Olympics than anyone in history.
