  • Description

MR. IAN SMITH BEING INTERVIEWED (SOF)

TRANSCRIPT: INTERVIEWER: "WHY THIS SUDDEN DECISION TO GO TO LONDON, PRIME MINISTER? I THOUGHT THE ORIGINAL ARRANGEMENT WAS FRO MR. BOTTOMLEY TO COME HERE?"

MR. SMITH: "YES, MR. BOTTOMLEY HAD AGREED TO COME HERE, BUT HE COULDN'T COME UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF THIS MONTH AND I RECEIVED THIS MESSAGE IN THE MIDDLE OF LAST MONTH, SO I CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THIS WAS TOO LONG FOR ME TO WAIT -- FIRSTLY -- AND SO I'VE CHANGED MY PLANS AND DECIDED TO GO OVER THERE. AND FOR ANOTHER TWO REASONS. SECONDLY, AS I HAVE SAID, WE MADE IT CLEAR TO THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT THAT WE BELIEVE THESE TALKS MUST BE FINAL AND CONCLUSIVE. AND I REALISE THAT EVEN IF MR. BOTTOMLEY CAME TO AN AGREEMENT WITH ME HERE, HE WOULD HAVE TO GO BACK TO LONDON TO CONFIRM IT WITH HIS GOVERNMENT AND THIS WOULD CAUSE A FURTHER DELAY. AND THIRDLY, I BELIEVE THAT, IF, IN THE END THE TALKS FAIL, THAT I SHOULD THEN MAKE A FINAL PERSONAL APPEAL TO THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER. WELL, I CAN DO THIS IF I'M IN LONDON, BUT NOT SO EASILY IF I'M IN SALISBURY."

INTERVIEWER: "WOULD YOU MAKE THAT APPEAL PUBLIC, SIR?"

MR. SMITH: "THIS WOULD DEPEND ON THE CIRCUMSTANCES."

INTERVIEWER: "IF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT IS EQUALLY AS ADAMANT AND REFUSED TO BUDGE ON THIS AND IF YOU DO IN FACT RETURN EMPTY HANDED FROM LONDON, WHAT ABOUT THE QUESTION OF U.D.I?"

MR. SMITH: "WELL THEN OF COURSE WE HAVE COME TO THE POSITION WHERE WE HAVE GOT TO FACE UP TO THE POSITION OF A U.D.I. THIS, AGAIN, IS WHAT I HAVE SAID TIME AND TIME AGAIN. IF NEGOTIATIONS FAIL, THEN WE COME FACE TO FACE WITH A U.D.I. I WILL THEN COME BACK AND WE WILL THEN FACE IT, AS FAR AS OUR GOVERNMENT IS CONCERNED, AND MAKE OUR DECISION."

INTERVIEWER: "DO YOU CONSIDER THE DECISION WOULD BE IN FAVOUR OF U.D.I.?"

MR. SMITH: "I HAVEN'T ANY DOUBT. BUT AS TO PRECISELY WHEN -- OF COURSE WE WOULD TIME IT TO SUIT OURSELVES AND NOT TO SUIT ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD."

INTERVIEWER: "WHAT REAL DANGER IS THERE, IN YOUR OPINION, OF BRITAIN USING MILITARY FORCE AGAINST RHODESIA IN THE EVENT OF U.D.I.?"

MR. SMITH: "THIS IS QUITE LUDICROUS. THIS IS NOT ONLY MY OPINION I HAVE REPORTS -- SECURITY REPORTS AND MILITARY REPORTS -- AND SO ON AND SO FORTH, NOT ONLY FROM THIS COUNTRY BUT FROM OTHER COUNTRIES, AND THIS ONE IS SIMPLY LAUGHED OUT OF COURT."

INTERVIEWER: "YOU ROLE IT OUT COMPLETELY?"

    MR. SMITH: "YES."
