Background: The Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak made a surprise stopover in Sudan on his way home to Egypt fro Oman on August 11. He was met at Khartoum Airport by the Sudanese President, Jaafar Nimeiri. After a news conference at which Mr. Mubarak spoke about the Palestinian problem the two leaders left for private talks at which they were expected to discuss the crisis in Lebanon, developments in the Arab world and bilateral relations. Only the day before Mr. Mubarak's visit, Sudan called upon the Arab League to invite Egypt to a proposed summit to be held shortly in Fez, Morocco. Egypt was suspended from the Arab League after it signed a peace treaty with israel. Oman, Sudan and Somalia are the only Arab states who refused to sever relations with Egypt after the peace treaty was signed.
