A 7.24 kilogram (16lb) baby boy - the second heaviest ever recorded - was born to Mrs. Patricia Clark on April 12 in Toms River, New Jersey. The as-yet unnamed child was born by Caesarian section and both he and his mother were said to be fine. His father, Robert, joked that in a year or two's time, he would be big enough to go to work. Mrs Clark said that already he was too large for the baby clothes she had prepared, and was about the size of an average nine-month old child. The birth of the heaviest baby on record occurred in South Africa on May 24 last year. Sithandiwe Nimane, who weighed 10.2 kilograms (22.51lbs) was also born by Caesarian section. Prior to the birth, doctors believed that the unusually heavy weight of his mother was due to excess fluid in the womb. Mrs Nimane had four other children who were an average weight at birth, and medical experts considered Sithandiwe's unusual weight might have been caused by a hyper-active pituitary gland.
