Background: Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka arrived home in Tokyo on Saturday (30 September) after his visit to the People's Republic of China.

Having successfully re-established the long-severed diplomatic links between the two countries, Premier Tanaka announced he was now working for a peace treaty with the Soviet Union.

He also told newsmen that during his talks with Chinese Premier Chou En-lai, he had won China's understanding of Japan's practical problems over Taiwan.

As Premier Tanaka landed in Tokyo, 2,500 - riot police guarded the airport to prevent demonstrations by right-wing groups. About 25 people were detained around the airport building.
