Background: TURIN AND ROME, ITALY AND BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

Thousands of women demonstrated in several cities in Western Europe on March 8 to mark the International Women's Day. In Turin, several hundred marched through the streets, and in addition to chants for nuclear disarmament, they shouted for stiffer sentences for sexual crimes and wanted the streets made safe for women to walk alone at night. Their march was mirrored by a similar one in Rome, with hundreds of women taking to the streets. In Brussels, three days of meetings, organised by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), climaxed with a march by 3,000 women through the city. They were protesting against the manufacture and deployment of nuclear missiles in Western Europe. A deputation from the League visited the headquarters of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) and others called on the Brussels embassies of the world's five major nuclear powers -- the United States of America, Britain, France, the Soviet Union and China. Groups from the U.S., Canada, and from Greenham Common in Britain, wired their counterparts from other West European countries and heard speeches by British actress Julie Christie and French writer Simone de Beauvoir.
