Background: Paris couturiers brought good news for women with bad legs when they presented their Winter collection last week. Hemlines went down, the bosom went out, and the models were enveloped in capes and furs.

The generalised length was low midcalf, teamed with high boots rising above the hemline.

Legs were not completely obsolete for almost every major fashion house allowed for occasional flashes of flesh with slits down the fronts, aides and backs of skirts.

Paris, which did not invent the mini skirt, did its best to bury it at the fashion shows - in spite of surveys which show that men throughout the world generally prefer shots skirts.

The couturiers, who never liked designing the mini dresses and skirts, should please textile manufacturers who will sell more fabric for the longer fashions.
