Background: Pope Paul expressed hope for union for union of the Anglican and Roman Churches when he proclaimed 40 English and Welsh saints in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome today (Sunday). Most of the Roman Catholic Bishops of England and Wales, led by Cardinal Heenan, the Archbishop of West-minister, attended the ceremony. About 10,000 British pilgrims made the journey.

The saints are among some 400 Catholic martyrs who died between 1535 and 1679 for refusing to accept the claims of English monarchs to spiritual leadership of the church in England.

The Pope emphasised that it is far from his intention to let the canonisations be a source of renewed bitterness between Anglicans and Roman Catholics, and said that the Roman Catholic martyrs provide and example of steadfastness in faith which all Christians can admire.

However, there was some disappointment in both Anglican and Vatican circles connected with the Christian unity cause that the Pope made no reference to the hundreds of Anglican martyrs who died during the persecutions of Queen Mary.

For the occasion, the Sistine Chapel choir gave place to London's Westminster Cathedral choir, augmented by English parish church choirs.
