Background: Trade unionists marched through the Bolivian capital, La Paz, August 12 in protest at a strike by the country's private transport operators. They chanted angry slogans and waved placards calling for a government intervention against the transport companies. Bus, taxi and truck drivers had been on strike since the start of the month, backing that the state allow them to increase fares and import spare parts. The protesters want the government to break the private monopoly on transport. The trade unionists have threatened an all-out strike if their demands, are not met. Bolivia is at present in a state of severe financial crisis, with rampant inflation, food shortages, and shortage of foreign reserves. Pressure is growing for the military government to hand over power to a civilian administration.
