PLEASE NOTE INTERVIEW WITH TONY BROOKS IS NOT ON THE CLIP
Transcript: Tony Brooks: "As a man I should say he was probably one of the most popular racing drivers in the world. He had a very gay approach to motor racing. He took it seriously, obviously, but also with a bit of happy-go-lucky about it (sic) and I think this endeared him to many more people. He really did extremely well in this approach."
Q. "How great would you say was the prestige that he brought his own country?"
"Well, I should say it was tremendous, because motor racing abroad has far more interest than say football or cricket, and therefore giants of football and cricket in England have tremendous prestige while a motor driver like Mike Hawthorn has a world-wide prestige."
Tony Vanderwell: Q. "Mr. Vanderwell, I know that has come as a terrible shock to you. What does Hawthorn's death mean to international driving?"
A. "Well, it has been a great shock to all of us. He was a great figure on the European tracks. He was a sportsman, and during the time he was there, racing for eight years, he imparted a great deal of knowledge and experience which is very hard to get.
"This is the cup that he won when he was driving the Thinwall at Goodwood in 1953; and he got the lap record at 92 m.p.h."
