Background: Lebanon has protested to the United Nations over Israeli military action inside its territory. The complaint followed reports from Beirut that Israeli gunboats shelled southern Lebanon for the second night in succession on Wednesday (25 June).

SYNOPSIS: Buildings in the village of Habriha received a battering in the latest strike, aimed at positions on the southern coast between the cities of Siddon and Tyre.

The next day Lebanon protested in the United Nations, saying that it might ask the Security Council to deal with the matter. The Lebanese Government claims the Israeli army is preparing to occupy and annex southern Lebanon. Military sources say Israeli troops have set up three strongholds in the south Lebanese border region. Many Western diplomats believe that the Israeli shelling is designed to turn the local predominantly Shi'ite Moslem population against the Palestinian guerrillas who use the area as their base. United Nations sources say more than one hundred Israeli troops have been using the deserted south Lebanese village of Khiam for training with the support of right-wing Lebanese militia.
