Background: In the Iranian parliamentary elections, the clergy-led Grand Islamic Coalition, dominated by the Islamic Republican Party, has won a decisive number of seats in the second and decisive ballot. It now seems clear that clergy will control Iran's first-ever democratically-elected assembly, which is expected to decide the fate of the fifty Americans held hostage in the U.S. Embassy in Teheran.

SYNOPSIS: The message carried in these boxes from polling stations throughout Iran spelt disappointment for President Abolhassan Bani-Sadr. His supporters and an assortment of independents won about half of the one hundred and fifty seats contested.

But their showing was not good enough to counter the coalition's victory in the first ballot. Earlier this month, Ayatollah Khomeini gave the President Permission to appoint a Prime Minister, subject to his approval. Anticipating a setback in Parliament, President Bani-Sadr was on Sunday (11 May) striving to appoint a cabinet before the assembly has its first meeting next month. islamic Republican Party leaders are demanding a say in the formation of the new administration.
