Background: HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS FROM LAGOS UNIVERSITY PARADED THROUGH THE NIGERIAN CAPITAL ON THURSDAY PROTESTING AGAINST BRITAIN'S ALLEGED FAILURE TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST RHODESIA AFTER THE HANGING OF SIX AFRICANS CONVICTED OF MURDER.

DURING THE DEMONSTRATION STUDENTS CLASHED WITH POLICE OUTSIDE THE OFFICE OF THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER. CLASHES BETWEEN POLICE AND DEMONSTRATORS CONTINUED FOR TWO HOURS.

THE DEMONSTRATORS HAD TO BE DISPERSED WITH TEAR GAS. THEY PLACED A COFFIN AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE HIGH COMMISSION, SYMBOLISING THE BURIAL OF THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, MR WILSON, THE RHODESIAN REBEL LEADER, IAN SMITH, AND THE COMMONWEALTH.

THE CLASHES BETWEEN THE POLICE AND STUDENTS BECAME UGLY, AND AT LEAST THREE STUDENTS WERE INJURED WHEN POLICEMEN HIT THEM WITH THEIR BATONS. A STUDENT SPOKESMAN LATER BLAMED THE POLICE FOR TURNING THE DEMONSTRATION INTO A RIOT. THE LAGOS POLICE COMMISSIONER ALSO TRIED TO MAKE THE DEMONSTRATORS DISPERSE, AND SAID THE POLICE HAD MEANT NO HARM.
