Background: TWO NON-WHITE GOLFERS ARE CREATING SPORTING HISTORY IN SOUTH AFRICA BY TAKING PART IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP CURRENTLY TAKING PLACE IN BLOEMFONTEIN, A BASTION OF APARTHEID.THE GOLFERS ARE SEWSUNKER "PAPWA" SEWGOLUM, A DURBAN INDIAN AND ISMAIL CHOWGLAW, A CAPE TOWN INDIAN.

BLOEMFONTEIN IS CONSIDERED A STRONGHOLD OF THE NATIONALISTS, THE SOUTH AFRICAN RULING PARTY AND IS ONE OF THE CITIES IN WHICH RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IS MOST STRONGLY OBSERVED.

THE NON-WHITE GOLFERS HAD THEIR ENTRIES ACCEPTED BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOLF UNION, WHO IN TURN HAVE BEEN PRAISED BY POLITICAL OBSERVERS FOR THEIR "COURAGEOUS" DECISION.

THE ORDINANCE PROHIBITING INDIAN FROM STAYING IN THE FREE STATE, WHOSE CAPITAL IS BLOEMFONTEIN, FOR MORE THAN 24 HOURS WAS LIFTED TO ALLOW THE TWO GOLFERS TO REMAIN FOR THE THREE-DAY COMPETITION.

"PAPWA" SEWGOLUM HAS TWICE WON THE DUTCH OPEN AND LAST YEAR WAS RUNNER-UP TO RETIEF WALTMAN IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN OPEN.RECENTLY HE WON THE NATAL OPEN, BUT WAS BARRED FROM USING CLUB FACILITIES.HIS TROPHY AND GBP400 PRIZE MONEY WAS HANDED TO HIM OUTSIDE ON A GREEN.

(FILM SHOWS THE OPENING STAGE OF THE PLAY.IT LIKEWISE SHOWS THE TENT PROVIDED FOR THE NON-WHITE COMPETITORS WHICH LATER IN THE DAY WAS REPLACED BY A CARAVAN.A NUMBER OF COMPETITORS, INCLUDING THE TWO INDIANS, ARE SEEN TEEING OFF.)
AT THE END OF THE FIRST ROUND SEWGOLUM WAS SHARING SECOND PLACE WITH FIVE OTHERS ON 69.GARY PLAYER, INTERNATIONAL STAR, WAS TRAILING ON 74.
