Background: Soccer.....and in Tunis on Wednesday (5 April), Tunisia met follow world Cup finalists Holland in a friendly match, and were hammered 4-0. The Dutch, who were runners up to West Germany in the 1974 World Cup, scored twice before the interval, and added a further two goals in the second half. It was a workmanlike performance by the Dutch, who have been drawn in Group Four in Argentina, along with Iran, Scotland and Peru. The Tunisians are in Group Two with Mexico, Poland and West Germany.
SYNOPSIS: At half time the Dutch led through goals by Nanniga and Leeuwen.
After the interval Holland, in the light shirts, playing from left to right, soon playing from left to right, soon found themselves penned back in their own half as the Tunisians tried to get back into the game.
The Dutch dominated in midfield, and were much more positive up front as they strove to build on their lead.
The Tunisian defence was under a lot of pressure...A free kick to Holland just outside the area....the ball was chipped over the wall, and a fine header found the net....but no goal.
Although trailing, there was plenty of running in the Tunisian side, but they found it difficult to break down the Dutch defensive barrier.
Another Dutch goal always seemed likely, and it came it the 63rd minute.... Vermeu scoring with a superb diving header.
Three-nil to Holland, and a minute from time Vermeulen got a fourth.
Even without the great John Cruyff, the Dutch showed that they can still be quite a force in Argentina.
