Background: Uruguay's Frente Amplio (Broad Front) party, the left-wing grouping set up earlier this year to fight the country's traditional two-party system, was this weekend fighting Monte-video's street pollution problem to publicise its campaign for this month's election. Party members decided the capital badly needed cleaning, and they marched into action with shovels, brooms and garbage lorries to collect and clear quantities of rubbish. Police did not interfere and no incidents were reported.

SYNOPSIS: With flags flying, members of Uruguay's Frente Amplio -- the Broad Front Party -- marched into a new kind of campaign at the weekend. They were fighting to clean-up Montevideo. Squads of party members to themselves brooms and shovels, and borrowed garbage trucks from the city authorities, to collect and clear away quantities of rubbish. Police didn't interfere with the volunteer garbage collectors and no incidents were reported. The campaign marks a new stage in the party's efforts to win new support for its political assault on Uruguay's traditional two-party system. The Frente Amplio was set up earlier this year as a grouping of left-wing parties, largely inspired by the coalition backing Marxist President Salvador Allende in Chile. it will be contesting the general election held later this month.
