Now as the piston is naturally ... the connecting annulus or rod which is directly connected to the gear, revolves and that drives the ring gear -- and that is the actual application of power. There is, of course, a corresponding cylinder on the opposite side and that can give us perfect balance. As it revolves in there, you see gears mesh into the annulus or the ring gear on the outside."

Background: Two inventors in Perth, Australia have developed a new automobile engine claimed to cut fuel consumption by 10 percent, improve power by 28 percent and raise torque by 35 percent.

The men -- Mr Bob Kostecki and his brother Gene -- have developed and refined the engine over a period of three years. It works on a variable camshaft principle - an idea that major manufacturers have spent millions of dollars crying to perfect.

The Kostecki brothers have been carrying out secret tests on a 316-cc engine for about 18 months. They said it had caused considerable interest among manufacturers in Britain, the United States, Europe, Australia and Japan.

A group of Western Australian investors is backing them financially to develop a more sophisticated 3200-cc engine, which fully incorporates integrated lubrication and cooling systems.
