Background: The Netherlands have emerged as Europe's leading karate nation. At the recent three-day European championships in Helsinki, the Dutchmen won the team title and finished with three individual victories. Spain scored two victories and Italy one.

SYNOPSIS: The top title -- in open class -- went to Jean--Pierre Arbila of Spain. He is seen here, facing camera, during his bout against George Godfrey of England -- a bronze medallist. Carbila defeated the Englishman to qualify for the final.

Another English contender in the open class was Vic Charles - facing the camera here during his bout against Nygren of Sweden. Charles shared third place with team-mate Godfrey.

Holland gained useful team points with a third place by Rob Wallraven in the sixty-five kilo category. He is seen here beating Coulter of Scotland. The winner of the sixty-five kilo class was Roberto de Luca. He gained Italy's only gold medal by beating Felippe Hita of Spain, the silver medallist. Hita's defeat meant Spain were unable to overhaul the Dutch in the team standings.

But the Spaniards were still overjoyed with Carbila's win in the prestigious open class.
