SYNOPSIS: Malta played particularly well in the first half. But here, playing left to right in the second half, their play deteriorated and they couldn't use their chances for scoring.
It as a disappointing match for Austria who were expected to score many more goals against Malta. But Austria had difficulty in gaining control of the match as Malta ensured the play was unusually fast. After the match, the pitch was blamed for the lack of scoring by the Austrians.
Austria's defence came under pressure from Malta several times, but it always withstood the challenge. Its goalkeeper, Friedl Koncilla played particularly well.
A predominantly Maltese crowd of more than 7,300 watched both teams come extremely close to scoring on numerous occasions. Austria and malta have played four matches in the past, and Austria has won each time.
Victory for Austria finally came in the 57th minute of play hen Hans Krakl scored the only goal of the match. His team now stands in second place in the group, with one match against East Germany to play.
