Background: A special concert at the United Nations on Sunday (24 October) marked the 26th anniversary of the promulgation of the U.N. charter. In an address before the unusual U.N. Day Concert, Secretary-General U Thant said that the world body had "felled short of expectations." But it could claim, no said, that another holocaust had been audited.

The highlight of the concert was the first performance of "The Hymn to the United Nations", written by the poet W.H. Auden and composed by cellist pablo casals. An orchestra formed by Mr. Casals and the U.N. Singers and the chorus of the Manhattan Schools of Music presented the work, commissioned by U Thant.

Later, U Thant presented to Mr. Casals a gold U.N. Peace Medal, and announced that a similar medal would go to Mr. Auden, who was unable to attend the concert.

SYNOPSIS: The United Nations, on Sunday, celebrated the twenty-sixth anniversary of the promulgation of the U.N. charter. Secretary-General U Thant, in a brief address before the annual U.N. Day Concert, said that the world body had "fallen short of expectations", but much had been accomplished to improve life for thousands of millions of people. The highlight of the concert was the first performance of "The Hymn To The United Nations", written by the poet, W.H. Auden, and composed and conducted by cellist Pablo Casals.

Following the performance, U Thant, who commissioned the hymn, personally thanked Mr. Casals, who will be ninety-five in December. The Secretary-General expressed the hope that the hymn, while not the official anthem, might be performed on appropriate occasions.

U Thant then presented the Spanish cellist a gold United Nations Peace Medal, and announced that a similar medal would go to Mr. Auden, who was unable to attend the concert. The Secretary-General thanked "these two great humanists for the work, which they have created for us." The hymn, sung by some two-hundred voices and played by the cellist's own orchestra, lasts about seven minutes.
