Background: The Ivory Coast has announced the building of a nudist colony village in its latest bid to attract tourists. The village, to be opened at the end of next year, is part of a programme started a few years ago to develop tourism into a major industry -- to try and diversify the primarily agriculturally-based economy.
Two major tourist 'villages' have already been built in the Ivory Coast, and the government was host at the formation of a West African tourist board three years ago. The tourist villages are, in fact, sophisticated holiday resorts offering luxury 'westernised' hotel accommodation and recreational facilities set against traditionally coloured African themes. Several million pounds (sterling) has been invested in short and long-term tourist development by the Ivory Coast Government, and by last year the number of foreign tourists was rising steeply. The country's equatorial climate, with consistently warm weather, is ideal for holidaying.
This feature, put together from film shot over the past three years, shows just the Ivory Coast is doing to attract tourists - and much-needed foreign currency - from all over the world.
