Background: INTRODUCTION: In Ethiopia, seven party central committee members have been dismissed in the past six months for gross breach of discipline and inefficiency. Ethiopia leader Mengistu Haile Mariam made this announcement at the opening if the four-day plenary session of the central committee of the Commission to organise the working people of Ethiopia (COPWE) on Tuesday (10 February).
SYNOPSIS: The Ethiopian leader opened the plenum by reporting on the country's achievements since the revolution in 1974, but he was critical of what he termed reactionary deeds and breaches of discipline by certain COPWE members. He warned that in the struggle for socialism heavy and sustained sacrifices had to be made.
Lieutenant Colonel Mengistu also warned that the military cooperation between Somalia and the United States presented a major threat to Ethiopia's survival. Ethiopia has accused Somalia of preparing for a full-scale attack, while Somalia maintains it is mobilising its army because of the concentration of Ethiopian troops along its border. Somalia and Ethiopia fought a war for the disputed Ogaden desert of southeast Ethiopia in 1977, but Somalia has not withdrawn its claims to the area.
