Background: THE AUSTRALIAN MINISTER FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, MR. PAUL HASLUCK, GOT A BIRD'S EYEVIEW OF AUSTRALIA'S FORWARD OPERATIONAL AIR BASE WHEN HE CIRCLED THE AIR STRIP AT UBON, NORTHEAST OF BANGKOK, THE THAI CAPITAL, ON JUNE 7.

IT WAS HIS FIRST INSPECTION OF THE OPERATIONAL BASE MANNED BY AIRMEN OF NO. 79 FIGHTER SQUADRON ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE AND THEIR COMRADES OF NO. 22 SQUADRON, ROYAL THAI AIR FORCE. HIS TOUR OF THE BASE INCLUDED A VISIT TO THE SQUADRON'S COOKHOUSE.

EARLIER ON HIS ARRIVAL, THE MINISTER WHO IS ON A TOUR OF SOUTH-EAST ASIA, WAS MET BY WING COMMANDER J.C. KICHENSIDE, COMMANDING THE 79 SQUADRON.

THERE ARE MORE THAN 200 AUSTRALIANS AT UBON, 28 MILES FROM THE LAOTIAN BORDER. THEY HAVE FITTED QUIETLY INTO THE LOCAL SCENE AND MADE THEMSELVES AT HOME AMONG THE THAI PEOPLE.

THE FIRST AUSTRALIANS ARRIVED IN UBON IN MAY 1962 TO BUILD CAMPS AND HEADQUARTERS BUILDINGS. THE AIRMEN FOLLOWED WITH THEIR AIRCRAFT AND THE BASE BECAME OPERATIONAL IN OCTOBER OF THE SAME YEAR.

THE NO. 79 SQUADRON WAS FORMED IN AUSTRALIA FOR SERVICE IN THAILAND AND THE UNIT IS EQUIPPED WITH AVON SABRE JET FIGHTERS. APART FROM ITS OPERATIONAL ROLE, THE BASE IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN THE TRAINING OF AIRMEN UNDER FORWARD CONDITIONS AND THERE IS A CONSTANT TURNOVER OF AUSTRALIANS AND THAIS.
