Background: Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, arrived in jordan on Monday (25 June) on the second stop of his Middle East tour. One of the main reasons for the visits to Arab countries is to canvas support for Libya in its deepening conflict with Egypt.
Colonel Gaddafi and his party flew in to a military airport near Amman. King Hussein and Queen Noor were there to greet the Libyan officials. Colonel Gaddafi arrived from Damascus where he held discussions with President Hafez Al-Assad.
The two leaders will hold three days of talks and official engagements. Topics for discussion include bilateral relations and developments in the Middle East since the signing of the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. During his stay Colonel Gaddafi will inspect Jordanian military installations and also visit Jordanian front-line positions.
Colonel Gaddafi is expected to seek Jordanian support -- as he had done in Syria - to demand that Arab opposition to the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty be carried out in accordance with resolutions passed at last November's Arab summit meeting in Baghdad. Libya is increasingly concerned at the threat of possible Egyptian invasion.
