Background: Rival groups of students clashed in the centre of Nicosia yesterday (Tuesday). Supporters of General Grives appeared on the streets for the first time in the present political crisis, demonstrating in favour of union with Greece. They ran from school to school trying to persuade other students to join them, and clashed with the supporters of President Makarios who were trying to prevent this.
Stones were thrown, and some of the young people were taken to hospital, but no-one was reported to be seriously hurt. Police separated the two groups of demonstrators.
Clashes were also reported from Famagusts, and from Morphou, west of Nicosia; and there was a peaceful march by Grivas supporters in Limassol.
