Background: BRM'S TRIUMPHED IN THE MONACO GRAND PRIX TODAY (SUNDAY), WITH BRITAIN'S FORMER WORLD CHAMPION GRAHAM HILL AND HIS TEAM-MATE RICHIE GINTHER IN FIRST AND SECOND PLACES - REPEATING THEIR 1963 SUCCESS. THE RACE - FIRST OF 11 WHICH COUNT FOR THE 1964 WORLD MOTOR RACING CHAMPIONSHIP, AS WELL AS THE DRIVERS' CHAMPIONSHIP - AUGURED WELL FOR THE BRM'S CHALLENGE TO LAST YEAR'S CHAMPIONS LOTUS.

THE RACE OVER 100 LAPS OF THE MONACO 'ROUND-THE-HOUSES' CIRCUIT, A TOTAL OF 190 MILES (314.5 KMS), RESULTED IN ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING DUELS FOR THE LEADERSHIP FOR SEVERAL YEARS. JIM CLARK, THE 1963 WORLD CHAMPION DRIVING A LOTUS WENT INTO THE LEAD AT THE START HOTLY PERSUED BY AUSTRALIA'S JACK BRABHAM, DRIVING HIS OWN BRABHAM CLIMAX, AND THE AMERICAN DAN GURNEY IN THE OTHER BRABHAM. BRABHAM WAS FORCED TO RETIRE WITH MECHANICAL TROUBLE, AND LATER GURNEY WAS PUT OUT THROUGH A CRASH. CLARK'S LOTUS SUFFERED FROM MECHANICAL TROUBLE, AND HILL TOOK OVER THE LEAD AND GRADUALLY DROVE HIMSELF INTO AN UNBEATABLE POSITION. HE EVENTUALLY CAME HOME FIRST MORE THAN A LAP IN FRONT OF RICHIE GINTHER. PETER ARUNDEL (BRITAIN) IN A LOTUS CAME THIRD, WITH JIM CLARK EVENTUALLY COMING FOURTH.

(ON THE 53RD. LAP GRAHAM HILL BROKE THE LAP RECORD WITH A SPEED OF 74.91 MILES-AN-HOUR (120.575 KPH). HE NOW LEADS THE TABLE IN THE DRIVERS' CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 9 POINTS. GINTHER HAS 6, ARUNDEL 4, AND JIM CLARK 3.)
