Background: The United Arab Republic and Israel on Wednesday (December 10) exchanged Arab civilians across the Suez Canal.

The operation -- carried out at Kantara -- was the latest in a series instituted under a family reunification scheme of the International Red Cross.

Some 85 former Gaza inhabitants who resided in Egypt were returned to their homes in the Gaza strip while 190 Egyptian citizens were sent back to Egypt.

Most of the Egyptians were inhabitants of Kantara East, evacuated by Israeli authorities to El Arish some two years ago when hostilities started along the waterway.

An Israeli Government spokesman said in Tel Aviv that Egypt had refused to take them back fore more than three years.
