Background: For President Eisenhower's drive into New Delhi Dec 9 ... the greatest mass demonstration since India's independence celebrations - and the biggest welcome accorded the President so far on this his fifth stage of the world tour.
Karachi had welcomed him with the greatest festivities since Pakistan became independent twelve years ago. "Never in the world," Eisenhower said," have I received a warmer welcome.
But New Delhi was yet to come, Over a million Indians applauded his entry into the City, holding up his car and pelting him with flowers: Eisenhower Zindabad! (Hail Eisenhower!) the vast sea of bobbing faces cried.
To India with its 415 million people vast crowds are not unusual - and the authorities expected a vast one for Eisenhower. Even their expectations were swamped by the Delhi demonstration. Eisenhower at times was almost swamped too as the people surged against breaking police cordons.
For the President's security men a nightmare. For the President an overwhelming, exhausting and emotional experience.
