    The slipways and workshops were finally completed in 1920. Then the first ship,
    the s.s. Torild of 1 860 tdw had already been delivered one year previously.

    Between 1919 and 1921 no less than 11 ships were delivered. Included in these
    was the first Swedish-built motorship over 10 000 tdw, m.s. Canton, for the
    Swedish East Asia Company.

    Since then many different types of vessels have been built by the yard,
    totalling some 250. The yard has built specialized vessels of between 20 000 and
    40 000 tdw, and tankers, bulk carriers and OBO ships up to 125 000 tdw. Car and
    passenger ferries and a large roll on/roll off container ship as well as a
    series of 27 000-ton packaged timber carriers have also been constructed at the
    yard. The most advanced newbuilding is the m.s. Nihon, a fast, ultra-modern
    container carrier.

    At present, construction is focused on OBO and bulk carriers of up to 125 000

    Work in the yard is centred on shipbuilding, included some repair work, and a
    certain amount of contract manufacture is also undertaken. The repair activities
    help to even out employment among outfitting workers. The yard has at its
    disposal a floating dock for vessels up to 12 000 tdw as well as a dry dock for
    vessels up to 30 000 tdw.

    The vessels are built in sections, which when completed, are transported to the
    berth and joined together. In this way the major part of the welding can be
    carried out in a hull-assembly hall, 301 m long, 65 m wide and 27 m high.

    From 1969 all newbuilding is concentrated on a single berth permitting the
    production of ships 275 x 39 m.

    A major advantage of sectional building, besides that of having more comfortable
    working condition, is the extremely short berth time, only 45 days for a typical
    OBO carrier of 124 000 tdw. This means that 5 ships of this tonnage can be built

    In 1971 Oresundsvarvet delivered a tanker to the Owners, Transportes del Este
    Navegacion S.A, Panama.

    Cepheus was the last unit in a series of three multigrade tankers, which have
    been built at Oresundsvarvet for companies within the Rethymnis & Kulukundis
    group. The vessels are designed for the carriage of refined petroleum products
    as well as certain chemicals and vegetable oils.

    Main particulars of the ship are as follows: Length over all 560'- 10 1/2" -
    170,957 m Breadth, moulded 84'- 11 3/4" - 25,900 m Depth, moulded 44'- 3 1/2" -
    13,500 m The deadweight is 27 870 tons on a draught of 33'- 5 3/4".

    m.t. CEPHEUS is designed with a single deck, forecastle and poop with engine and
    boiler room and deckhouse for all accommodation aft.

    The main engine of the CEPHEUS is a 6-cylinder diesel engine of Gotaverken's
    make with a bore of 750 mm and a stroke of 1 600 mm. It develops 11 400 BHP at
    120 rpm and gives the ship a speed of abt 15,4 knots at a mean draught of 33'-
    0". It is equipped for running on heavy fuel with a viscosity of up to 3 500 sec
    Redwood No 1 at 100 deg. F.

    In 1940, Gotaverken purchased the yard and, as a fully-owned subsidiary of
    Gotaverken, the shipyard has been a part of the Salen Group since 1971.

    From the 1st of July 1976 the Swedish Government owns 51% of the shares of
    Gotaverken. This is second largest ship company in World & 1st in Sweden.

    Gotaverken Oresundsvarvet is the fifth largest shipyard in Sweden, accounting
    for about 10% of the production of this country and hence 1% of the world

    The yard has a newbuilding capacity of about 500 000 tdw per year. The total
    order reserve now covers 9 vessels aggregating about 1 100 000 tdw.

    100% of this tonnage is for export.

    The company's turnover in 1974 was Sw.kr. 450 millions and in 1975 Sw.kr. 500

    The investments in 1974 were Sw.kr. 60 millions and in 1975 Sw.kr. 50 millions.
