Background: PRINCE PHILIP, NOW ON A STATE VISIT TO SAUDI ARABIA, TOURED THE ROYAL CAPITAL OF RIYADH YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) LOOKING AT THE TRADITIONAL AND MODERN IN THE DESERT KINGDOM.HE HAD BUSY DAY INSPECTING THE PICK OF HORSES FROM KING FEISAL'S STABLES, WATCHING THE ROYAL FALCONS HUNTING IN THE DESERT AND INSPECTING A MODERN SECONDARY SCHOOL.

THE INSPECTION OF THE HORSES WAS CARRIED OUT WITH STRICT ORIENTAL FORMALITY.PRINCE PHILIP SAT ON RUG WITH HIS HOST AS THE HORSES, THOROUGHBRED ANIMALS SPECIALLY BRED FOR STUD PURPOSES, WERE BROUGHT OVER FOR HIM TO LOOK AT.PRINCE BANDAR, WHO KNOWS THE NAME AND ANCESTRY OF EACH ANIMAL, IS SHORTLY TO LEAVE FOR ENGLAND TO ATTEND THE ROYAL AIR FORCE COLLEGE AT CRANWELL.

FIFTY HORSES WERE PARADED BEFORE THE ROYAL VISITOR, AND PRINCE PHILIP COMMENTED ON EACH OF THEM.HE IS TO BE PRESENTED WITH ONE OF THEM BEFORE HE LEAVES SAUDI ARABIA ON MONDAY.

AT RIYADH'S LARGEST SECONDARY SCHOOL ONE PUPIL APPEALED TO PRINCE PHILIP TO MAKE SURE THAT ENGLISH GEOGRAPHY BOOKS WERE REWRITTEN.THE YOUNGSTER COMPLAINED THAT THE BRITISH THINK OF THE ARABS AS LIVING IN TENTS AND RIDING ON CAMELS.TO THIS PRINCE PHILIP GENTLY REPLIED: 'THE BRITISH ARE INCURABLY ROMANTIC.THEY LIVE IN HOUSES AND RIDE IN CARS AND LIKE TO THINK THAT THE ARABS HAVE CAMELS AND LIVE IN TENTS'.

TOMORROW, PRINCE PHILIP IS TO RETURN THE COURTESY OF A VISIT HE PAID AFTERWARDS TO KING FEISAL AT THE AL-HAMRA PALACE.HE WILL GIVE A DINNER IN KING FEISAL'S HONOUR AT WHICH BRITISH OFFICIALS WILL ATTEND.
