Background: Mr. Bulent Ecevit, the former Social Democrat Prime Minister of Turkey, appeared in a civil court in Ankara on Monday (1 March) accused of insulting the police chief of the town of Nevshir last year. At the time Mr. Ecevit had been attending the funeral of the local chief of the Republican People's Party who had been killed by right wing terrorists. The funeral procession was attacked by a right wing mob and when the local police chief refused to take special measures to protect the procession, Mr. Ecevit shouted at him: "What sort of a police chief are you?" After considering the case the court referred it back to the court of Nevshir which legal sources said was tantamount to dropping it. Mr. Ecevit has already spent two months in jail since the military took over in Turkey for disobeying a ban on the open discussion of politics.
