    Background: NEW DELHI, INDIA

INTRODUCTION: About 2,000 men and women from six different organisations demonstrated outside the United States Embassy in New Delhi on Friday (11 September).

SYNOPSIS: The demonstration was calm and peaceful as the two thousand men and women marched through the streets of India's capital on their way to the American Embassy. They carried banners and placards and chanted anti-American slogans on the way. When they arrived at the Embassy, they came up against a cordon of policemen who prevented them from getting too close to the building.

The demonstrators claimed that President Reagan's policy on Pakistan was contrary to the interests of India. Recently, two United States mission visited Pakistan for talks on economic and military aid. Pakistan is hoping that the United States Congress could be persuaded to approve the restoration of economic aid and military sales which it says it needs to meet a Soviet threat from Afghanistan.

Many of the demonstrators were also angry because the United States used its veto to block a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning South African raids into Angola. Defending the veto, American officials said it was used because the resolution placed the blame for the escalation of violence in southern Africa solely on South Africa.
